This is good news, I guess. :-)

I just hope that the 3D modeling part of Blender is not going to be forgotten!

Right now I see Blender more like a tool for creating animated movies.

I love Blender, but it will take some time before it can fit into a content-creation pipe-line.

Right now I do my modeling in Blender, export it, and do my lightmapping, etc. in MAX.

Personally I dont see a problem with it being commercial. Maybe its better if its commercial, since if they get more money, the extra money might be spent on keeping that studio alive or hiring more people. This means higher chance on creating high quality movies.

Not only will this get more attention for blender, but it'll have more CG noobies saying "ZOMG! I love how they did the graphics for that movie! I'm SOOO getting blender!"

Hi curious people!

The Blender Foundation only pays for the flight to Buenos Aires for Bassam and Andy. Studio Manos Digitales takes care for an appartment, a fee, and working space for them.

This Argentinan studio decided to work with Linux and Open Source, and they'll execute all 3D work in Blender. It's the biggest 3D project with Blender going on now, much bigger than Elephants Dream even. The impact for Blender and development will be substantially. I'm very happy to be able to help them this way... also because this visit would probably not have been possible with a bit of support from Blender Foundation.

There's not much money going on in the Foundation still, but it is growing. So one of the targets to work on soon is to get some kind of a representative board who will manage the funds we can spend on support for Blender projects. Nice one for Blender Conference to put on the agenda!

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have great trust in Ton. Blender has been his baby for a long time now and I don't believe he would do anything rash that might hurt it. Just like any loving parent :)

I don't have any indication yet that Ton will be leaving Blender. I had dinner with him last Friday to prepare for Siggraph and if anything, he's more motivated than ever.

For the rest, I agree with gunnarstahl 100%. Ton chooses his sponsor projects carefully, I'd hope everyone has come to realize that by now. He doesn't just give away money unless it will help Blender advance.

Yeah, if Ton leaves, and that's what makes him happy, then that's much better than him keeping on helping Blender.

P.S. How is Ton sponsoring the project? With money?

Can you even imagine what it might mean to blender when these guys support this project? Someone seems to already have forgotten how much elephants dream boosted up blender. Imagine how much a commercial project which might come to a successfull ending will boost the blender development!

And for the discussion about Ton: Speculating about him leaving the blender foundation is nothing but spreading FUD. Remember that April fools day joke this year, rigth here on blendernation? Someone took that too serious.

Besides that: As long as Ton is in, he's in. As soon as he decides to leave, he leaves. It is not a question if he stays or not. Blender is not a one-man-show. Usually when one leader leaves it will reveal how much the goals he was striving for were important for the people who were led by him.

There are many developers behind the blender movement. And if some of us who are using blender would just put some time into learnig to code, we could just speed the whole thing even more up.

Maybe it is time to fire up your development environment and start giving back to the community.

It is all about dedication.

Yt,

Yeah no offense to Ton but I am a little disappointed that scarce Blender money is being spent to send these two to go to BA to help a commercial project.Good work if you can get it!
Without wishing to bitch about it I think Ton makes too many on the quiet decisions like this and also is inclined to offer the work to the same people each time.
