Fresh Blender News, Every Day
AndyD wrote a very nice tutorial on the Wiki showing how to use Shape Keys and the Timeline Window to use as lip-sync tools. This is a rare treat since this topic isn't covered a lot. What's really novel about the technique is that you don't need any external tools to help. All you need is Blender.

The last time I've written this kind of article (preview of a really promising game under development) that didn't had an happy ending (too bad, it was a really good looking game); three months later time to write something about Club SILO (CS from now on) has come and hopefully, since the game is in an advanced phase of development, this time we'll see the finished product (I feel a little like Tutankamon, I've to admit it).
Some time ago, Michael Thoenes released a character rig under the Blender Artistic License. It's nicely done and is a fine addition your character rig library which I hope also includes Ludwig and Mancandy.

After trying out Gen3 I have to give a negative answer to this question, Gen3 is simply the better attempt to create a full-fledged tree generator for Blender since now and the one with the most complete (and complex) GUI, full stop. And it can only keep improving week by week.
The Blender Foundation released the second Release Candidate for version 2.42 last night. Again, they need your help to test it before it can be turned into a final Release.

MonsterStudios, a partner with MonsterWeb (the unlimited web hosting people), has recently published an animated commercial (completed entirely with Blender) for use on the MonsterWeb site (it's on the main page).
After MonsterStudios was done and we got a look at it, I was interested with what method he used to do the box flap animation. MonsterStudios was more than happy to share it's secrets with the Blender Community, so Daniel LaBarge, a MonsterWeb employee, gave a quick tutorial on how the box animation was done.
*Edit: After some comments I added more to the tutorial to (hopefully) make it more clear. I would also like to warn everyone that this is not a "beginner tutorial" since it goes over major concepts rather quickly. But if you have a question - post it!
**Edit: I just did this as a video tutorial (22.4 MB XviD, remember to right click and Save As!), in case someone was having trouble. Continue Reading 'Tutorial: Modeling and Animating Movable Box Flaps' »
Here's an article that may surprise you: Rosalyn Hunter describes her first encounter with Blender in her article 'COMPLETELY LOST in Blender - The untutorial part 1'. Hoping to create a Ghost in the Shell avatar in a few minutes the experience is, lets say, somewhat confusing.

You might remember when we reported on Blender's accepted Google Summer of Code (GSoC) projects for 2006. There were three accepted through Blender Foundation, and a fourth accepted through Python. Recently, a development build has been posted with the progress of Nicholas Bishop's project entitled "Interactive Sculpting with Multi-Resolution Models" (Nicholas is also the author of Sharpconstruct, which makes him the right man for the job for a project like this). Rather than describing the build, we decided to show you!
