Blender Summer Of Code

logo.gifIt's that time again! Google's Summer of Code (SoC) has arrived and Blender's announcement has been posted on the Blender homepage. Students! Developers! Google's SoC is your chance to bring Blender to the next level!

From the Google SoC site:

Summer of Code 2006 is a program that offers student developers stipends to create new open source programs or to help currently established projects. Google will be working with a variety of open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund several hundred projects over a three-month period.

Blender is one of 101 participating mentoring organizations (up from 40 in 2005). The first instance of the SoC program in 2005 brought Blender several projects that we now use everyday. So if you have a great idea, or even if you don't yet, visit the Blender SoC Ideas site and imagine the possibilities!

    hi,

though I am not able to take part on the SoC-2006 project (my programming knowledge is not nearly enough - besides I'm no student) I have to tell, that I find the listed SoC-ideas quite great!!!
I think realizing them will take Blender much forward again. :-)

I agree. The Summer of Code did some great things for Blender in 2005. It's going to be good to see it again this year. Thanks to Google and all the students that'll take part in this.

Quote from Summer of Code Ideas page on wikipedia for Blender:

Render export/plugin API: extend Blender to have better access to external renderers, including pixie, aqsis, prman, yafray, povray. The applicant should have good knowledge of the Renderman standard, and basic knowedge of yafray/povray.

    YAY!

I would love a non-phptorealistic renderer like this http://freestyle.sourceforge.net/GALLERY/GUIDING-LINES/dirindex.php integrated into blender.

I hope in a deep developing of the Compositing/Video NLE possibilities in Blender, to use it as an editor for video e audio and to integrate his incredibles 3D possibilities with real footage in various format and resolution (like Combustion, Shake, After Effect, Vegas, etc etc).

    It's a dream ?

@Ed freestyle is quite cool! Blender Support would rock!

    Ditto.

I agree about freestyle, THAT would be a great addition! It's GPL and written in python so maybe it wouldn't be too hard to intigrate?

Freestyle WOULD be cool - Imagine animated line drawings and even cartoons created in Blender!

I second the request for a Gelato plugin for Blender. Would totally rock!

yeah gelato would be very cool indeed as most of us use nvidia cards…
look here for a wip plugin by marioamb :
    http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66308

it works well except for the camera fieldofview which does not exactly match blender internal (( when you composite both renders there is a one pixel error… ) but aside from this minor glitch, it works
