Hi Rui,

So the LGM is over and your back ! I think you took some rest ...you deserve it. Thanks to you, Blender gain new users and also new developers. I saw (french) people from de Debian team who didn't know anything about Blender, and who asked me a lot of questions after your workshops. They where realy surprised, they thought blender was a CAD thing. Of course you could not give answer to all questions... but you , and Brecht , made the demonstration that blender is not only a full hight quality 3D package, it's also a very well managed project, and of course, one of the most imortant project in the free software comunity.

Hope to see you next time... in october in Amsterdam :) (i'll pratice my English before)

cheers

Reuben,

Yes, I will have to do a better approach next time. Maybe we can get some more Blender developers there too, since I'm not a Blender Developer it is always hard for me to talk about integration between Blender and other applications when I don't really know that much on the Blender Code. But thanks for the nice tips.

I learned a bit on things that didn't went that well, so I will improve it next time, there is always a next time :) .

I just felt like we were a bit apart from the whole event

It's probably more to do with the fact that they probably don't have much of an interest in things like modeling. If you do a presentation next year you might consider topics they can relate to more like how gimp (and other image programs) can hook into verse and modify textures in real time. (or better yet, wouldn't it be cool if you could use gimp's animation plugin set inside blender's sequencer via verse?)

You could also try getting dev from other projects that have more to do with animation to attend. Synfig or Ktoon for instance.

Hey bart,

It was mostly because the other teams didn't seem to really want to hook up with Blender, like keeping some distance, I don't know. As I mentioned earlier it might have been my fault, I could have made some better impression on Blender and wasn't able to deliver it as expected, perhaps if I had something like an Orange Trailer people could have gotten more enthusiastic about it.
This is definitly something I have to improve next time.

As you can see also by the post of Reuben, in the Scribus guys summary, "The Blender folks had a number of small talks and demos, but owning to other meetings none of us had much time to participate.". We did some things I was hoping the other project teams to do, more workshops for users and such.

I guess that since we were so few in there related to Blender we didn't really left a mark, at least from an Education perspective it was pretty good. Maybe next time we can get more developers there and get some talks on how to get Blender to interconnect with all the other great projects there.

There is one big difference between the other projects and Blender, Blender already has a Conference of its own, something that the other projects seem to lack, thus trying to get the most out of any time they get the chance to be together.

I just felt like we were a bit apart from the whole event, where all the other teams hooked and none really hooked up with us. I guess that one of the GiMP developers were right and that all the people thought the event to be developers oriented and less user oriented.

Anyway, I can always improve for next year, we learn from the mistakes we make :) .

Hey Rui,

when you write: "the guys from the other projects seemed to look at Blender as an established tool that is at this higher level; they were much more enthusiastic with the other projects than with Blender", does that mean that people think that Blender is so sophisticated that it's hard to contribute? When something is at a higher level, for me that would make it more interesting :)

Oh, and are you somewhere in those photo's on Flickr? I've looked at them, but without descriptions I have no idea :)

Thanks Bassam, truly hope you can meet some of the people that were there, they were pretty nice.
Good luck on the Premier, since I can't be there to give it to you guys in person :) .

nice series of articles ruis, thanks for the report on the conference. I wish some of us ( the orange team ) could have been there, but we were all still very deep in crunch time during the conference. Hopefully we'll meet some of the same people at the premier tommorrow.
