CG Challenge XIX: The Journey Begins

8

The Journey BeginsThe 19th CG Society Challenge has begun and this time the key theme is to portray the emotions of a character, or characters, about to embark on some kind of journey.

From the challenge website:

Your Mission

In this Challenge entrants must depict a scene that encapsulates the emotions and trappings of a character (or group) setting out on an epic journey. The final works must demonstrate a depth of story and view that shows the character(s) up close and the journey beyond. This can be metaphorical, though it must be clear (without any explanation) how the image depicts a character departing on a great journey.

The key theme of this challenge is to portray the emotions of a character, or characters, about to embark on some kind of journey. It is recommended that entrants focus on physically small characters (bugs, Hobbits, Elves, Children, Faeries, birds, animals, micro robots - whatever) in a foreground setting against a vast backdrop of epic proportions (by comparison).

Some of the prizes (they have over US $50,000 in prizes!) may not be too interesting to Blender users (copies of Maya, Modo, Softimage, 3DS Max etc), but the workstations they offer as grand prizes look extremely attractive. Apart from that, I'm sure that getting your name on the winners list is a sure way to kickstart your career in CG.

The Challenge website has tons of information: check out the 2D and 3D entries forums to get a glimpse of what people are working on, or take a look at some previous challenges.

Deadline: 27 May 2006

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. You have to sign up at CGForum, though, don't you?
I understand that they charge a fee of 29$, is that correct? :(

  2. The 14th CG challenge, ok so why they use the title: "CG Challenge -XIX-: The Journey Begins"
    XIX == 19

No MrCarnivore, it's free... as the past CG challenges.

  3. "Some of the prizes (they have over US $50,000 in prizes!) may not be too interesting to Blender users (copies of Maya, Modo, Softimage, 3DS Max etc)"

    Heh, that's funny :)

  4. I might be blind, but I can't find any signup button on the CGSociety page. Only the one where it says "Annual Society Membership for 29,95$ JOIN NOW".
Can anyone tell me how to sign up for free?

  5. As with most CG Society things, participation usually just means posting in the CGTalk forum with your entry. Note how "Deliverables" must be submitted "online".

  6. Yeah, just register to the forum. After registering you can sign up for the challenge. You do NOT need to be a CG Society Member, just a forum member- which is free.
