Trying to make Blender run smoothly on ATI graphics equipped machines is like trying to win a dragster racing challenge riding a bike: you're gonna loose for sure.
Well, at least any attempt was going to be a failure until a brave-hearted BlenderHead (a very crazy one, believe me) fell accidentally upon the solution.
I have to admit that the first time I've read what he managed to do I thought it was one of those "don't do it at home" things, but looking at the positive feedback he got on his Elysiun thread I was encouraged to publish this issue here on BlenderNation.
Worth have a try before throwing your beloved graphics card out of the window.
P.S.: Win32 only stuff, I reccommend to people living near Blender users who run on Linux to put on an helmet when they go outside for a walk , it will start raining ATI products soon ;-)

It sounds little freaky that they both have a same dll
I don't know what is the problem running Blender on linux with ATi card. For me, it runs about 3 times faster than on windows.
Similarly there is no problem running ATI on OSX, in fact I believe that it is NVidia that has an issue on OSX.
I've noticed no slow down with an x700 ATI card on Windows x64, but I do notice SEVERE slow down on my Radeon Xpress 200M integrated card. I noticed in the elysiun thread that several posts mentioned an integrated ATI card. Maybe this is finally the answer to my laptop woe.
I have a ATI 9250 and the old .dll works for me.
In my kubuntu works fine with MESA drivers, the oficial drivers of ATi for linux... when use the ZOOM, the 'camera' stop a little bit when zoom in or zoom out.
No problem with my suckin' ATI chip r250 DRI even if i know i under-exploit my card but you know what we tell:freedom above all =).
cheers
It works like a charm! I've an embedded ATI Radeon 9000 in my ACER laptop.
My blender UI was looking blur. And now, everything is sharp and clear!
We have a ATI-FireGL V5100 running on a windows XP Pro ... This lags something terrible in Blender. Which driver were you proposing we use ??
I have a new x1600 and i don't even get near the UI to test it:( Blender crashes on start. Newes driver, win xp pro. With the old 9800 pro there was no problem with UI.
i only have one problem where the mesh gets jagged :(
