Tutorial: New Ocean Techniques in Blender

10

oceanColin Litster writes some of the coolest Blender tutorials that I know. His most recent work is a very detailed introduction to creating a realistically animated ocean.

Over the last few years I have been experimenting with techniques to help convey realistic large scale oceans and seas. In my previous tutorial I discussed techniques that would enable a stormy ocean to be created to the horizon with reasonable results. However, the techniques suffered from the effects of repeating patterns and restrictions in panning or moving the camera. One important aspect that was missing was wave crests. This was pointed out to me by several more nautical colleagues than I. Realising that I would need several seas for my production, from calm weather through to force 12 hurricanes, I have been developing techniques to make that possible within Blender.

You'll find the first part of his tutorial on his website, www.cogfilms.com.

Update: Colin just emailed me to tell me that the tutorial is now complete. It has become a 4(!) part tutorial. Enjoy!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  2. Just wanted to express gratitude and admiration for the work that went into this tutorial. I am blown away. I couldn't find an email link on Mr. Litster's web site to thank him personally. I am hopeful that he will get this message.

  3. Hi klp,

Thank you for your kind words. I have only been frequenting this site for a little while but today registered so that I could reply.

I took the email address off my site because I started receiving huge amounts of SPAM. However, I can now be contacted here, or Elysiun, or CGTalk.

    All the best.

  4. Does anyone have a thread or something that we can talk to Colin in? I notice that his film will include a Flower class corvette. I spent a summer on one here in Nova Scotia, Canada where it is a floating museum. HMCS Sackville. I'd love a chance to discuss his project.
