Blender for pocketPC Revived

ipaqDo you remember Blender for the IPAQ? It was one of the projects we did at Not a Number, I guess to prove to the investors that mobile 3D was feasible. Amazingly, it worked and for a while it was good. Unfortunately, the IPAQ version was not part of the Open Source deal that the Blender Foundation struck with the investors so after the second bankruptcy it was no longer available.

Until now.

Orange Updates

orange updateThere are two new updates on the Orange blog: Matt (Lead Artist, Titles and 2D designer) writes about how the team manages all the files of the project in 'Behind the scenes, shots and, er… files'. It's interesting to learn how they tackled the problem of managing such a huge amount of files.

Video Tutorials

Afbeelding 32.pngVideo tutorials are a great way of learning how to use Blender. Apart from having someone actually giving you a cool demonstration, they're the best way of getting to appreciate the power of Blender. (You won't believe the number of times I've heard 'Oooh! I didn't know Blender could do *that*!' when I gave a demo ;-).

yafray logoRCRuiz has posted a hack that speeds up Photon Map rendering in Yafray a great deal. It's a bit thin on the details but it would seem that he stores the photon distribution in your scene so that you can quickly re-render it from any camera angle and position.

Tutorial: Animating Realistic Water Surfaces

water surfaceThis has nothing to do with yesterday's article about the new fluid system in Blender. Instead it explains how to create realistically animated water surfaces using (animated) texturemaps.

Fluid Simulation in Blender

fluid 3As of version 2.40, Blender has an integrated Fluid simulator. It is the result of one of the Google Summer of Code projects. It allows you to define fluid bodies, obstacles and in- and outflow of fluids. The results are amazing but you should be prepared for some long and memory-hungry calculations, especially when you're using high-resolution meshes.

The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly EffectI don't know where he gets both the energy and the inspiration, but after working on the Orange movie during the week @ndy is also working on his own projects during the weekends. He posted another amazing image.

Here's what he writes about it:

pardon the 'roughness' of this image, but i could only work on it this weekend… otherwise these crazy orange guys would've chopped my head off.

this is a bit more gimp than blender, but… oh well…
i just rendered out some little thingies and then stuck them together in gimp.
the idea for this image is a bit older and so is the little dino character.

You can find the full-size version on Elysiun. You can post your praise there too.
